The International Mathematical Olympiad 2024 (IMO) is a World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School Students that is hosted in a different country each year. The first-ever IMO took place in Romania in 1959, with 7 nations taking part. It has steadily grown to include over 100 nations from five continents. The IMO Board guarantees that the tournament occurs each year and that each host country follows the IMO’s norms and traditions.

Stage 1 of the International Mathematical Olympiad 2024 (IMO)

    • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM)
    • The IOQM is being conducted by the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India). More details about the IOQM will be announced tentatively in the first week of July 2024 on the MTA(I) website https://www.mtai.org.in/.
      Date: September 3, 2024 (Tentative)
      1. Duration: 3 hours
      2. Total marks: 100
      3. The answer to each question is an integer in the range 00-99. No negative marking. OMR-based exam.
      4. Composition of the paper: 10 questions of 2 marks each; 10 questions of 3 marks each; 10 questions of 5 marks each.

    Stage 2

    • Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)
    • Date: October 29, 2024 (Tentative)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Number of questions: 06
    • Each question requires writing detailed proof.

    Stage 3

    Stage 4

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai invites students who meet the requirements to the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC), a one-month maths camp. It typically lasts from late April through the end of May for first-time participants. Meanwhile, it starts around 10 to 14 days later for senior participants. Olympiad maths and various other types of general maths are taught to the participants. The top six students in each of the four selection tests and two practice exams given during this time period are eligible to represent India in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

    Stage 5

Prior to leaving for IMO, the chosen team of six students goes through another round of training and orientation for around ten days.

The six-person team chosen at the end of IMOTC, accompanied by a leader, a deputy leader, and an observer, represents the nation at the IMO, which is held in a new IMO member country each year in July. The IMO competition consists of two written examinations that are held on consecutive days. The exam consists of three tasks and lasts four and a half hours on each day of the competition. India has been a member of the IMO since 1989.

Students from the Indian Team who win gold, silver, or bronze medals at the IMO receive monetary prizes of ₹ 5000/-, ₹ 4000/-, and ₹ 3000/- during a formal ceremony held at the end of the training camp the following year. Members of the Indian squad for IMO will be chosen based on their ability to meet requirements such as age restriction, medical fitness, parental approval, and so on. The selected students must, in particular, hold a valid Indian passport that complies with the host country’s visa requirements.

The team, the leader, and the deputy leader’s overseas travel are covered by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), while NBHM (DAE) covers all other costs associated with international participation as well as the whole in-country programme. RMO is the first crucial phase in the course for students who want to complete the Mathematical Olympiad programme leading to international participation (IMO). The students must contact the RMO coordinator in their area well in advance to enrol and pay the required (nominal) fees in order to appear for the RMO.

Latest Updates on the International Mathematical Olympiad 2024 (IMO)

The IMO Jury decided on June 6, 2022, to move the hosting of IMO 2024 from Ukraine to the United Kingdom. Due to the Russian attack on Ukraine, this happened. The IMO Board and the IMO 2024 planners expect to organise an IMO in Ukraine as soon as the circumstances are favourable.

The University of Bath will serve as the students’ site, while the Celtic Manor Hotel will serve as the leaders’ premises, based on our preliminary expectations for the IMO 2024 venues. Dr Ceri Fiddes will serve as the IMO 2024 director, and many of the senior organisers will also be present for IMO.

The dates remain the same as that of IMO 2019. Therefore, the arrival day for the leaders would be 11 July 2024, and the departure day for everyone would be 22 July 2024.

Keep in mind that this information is subject to change in the next few months.
