The IJSO 2024 is going to be held in Romania. Pathfinder is here to let you in on every minute detail regarding the Olympiad. So, give this blog a thorough read to know the necessary steps.

    About IJSO 2024

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is an annual individual and team Natural Sciences competition for students under sixteen years old as of 31st December of the competition year. IJSO was founded to promote the importance of natural sciences in young people’s general education and in all parts of their lives.

    Aims of IJSO 2024

    • Promoting and rewarding the pursuit of excellence in scientific endeavour.
    • Challenging, stimulating and encouraging gifted students to further develop their talents in Natural Sciences.
    • Creating friendships and relationships among students around the world from an early age.

Why you should consider the IJSO 2024 Exam?

Are you aware that numerous Indian students compete in International Olympiads throughout the world? Olympiads are plentiful, covering everything from athletic competitions to intellectual assessments. Undoubtedly, they are all striving for the same thing: EXCELLENCE. Junior Science refers to the ‘science’ taught till grade X. Don’t you believe you ought to take part and add your name to the list? The moment has come for one to reflect and act on it.

Structure of the IJSO 2024 Syllabus

The International Junior Science Olympiad is a general science competition. Therefore, the IJSO syllabus does not precisely split into the fields of biology, chemistry, and physics but instead aims to emphasise the fundamental broad tenets of science.

As a result, the formulation of questions contains a transdisciplinary nature. In other words, relevance is the main goal of this conceptual approach.

Content of the IJSO 2024 Syllabus

    • The former syllabus of the IJSO.
    • The syllabi for students up to 15 years of age in the participating countries.
    • The problems given at the IJSO until the 5th IJSO in 2008

    Examples from Previous Exams

Many of the challenges are quite interesting in character. As an example, one experiment simulated the functioning of neurons and the capacity of neurotransmitters to activate gates, which in turn generate electrical impulses. Consequently, students were then asked to conceptualise and build electrical circuits that mimicked these gates by connecting resistors in series or parallel to provide a meaningful readout of an excitatory neural signal. Similarly, another example was in Chemistry, where flow dynamics were utilised to determine the molecular weight of liquid polymers by measuring fluid viscosity.

Furthermore, in biology, students extracted anthocyanin pigments from various plants and utilised them as an efficient pH indicator to identify acidic and basic food, an apparently extremely important chemical concept. In theory, a question on ethanol extraction from maize plants provided students with an excellent understanding of industry processes, with an emphasis on efficient and inexpensive biochemical processes.

    Steps of the IJSO 2024

You have to go through a process in order to reach the IJSO. Follow the steps given below

    Step 1

National Standard Examination in Junior Science: The initial step is to participate in NSEJS at the nearest facility. This assessment will take place at over 1,000 locations across the country. You can find a list of these centres (as well as the contact person for each) on the website www.iapt.org.in.

The NSEJS test will have 70 multiple-choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology based on the CBSE class X syllabus. Students in Classes VIII, IX, and X who were born on or after 1.1.2010 and before 31.12.2011 (both days inclusive) are eligible to take the NSEJS. The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) organises this test. You must work hard, answer questions correctly, and thus earn a spot on the merit list of the Top 300.  Click here for a sample Q&A.

    Step 2

Indian National Junior Science Olympiad: For the most part, the syllabus remains the same as NSEJS. It is organized across the country at 15 HBCSE centres. Click here for a sample question paper

    Step 3

Orientation Cum Selection Camp – The top 35 (about) INJSO students will be eligible to attend the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSE) for two to three weeks at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR), Mumbai. This is the third stage of the selection process. Two teams, both made up of the top six students chosen from OCSC, will be representing India in the International Olympiad in Junior Science in Romania in December 2024. Exceptional students receive recognition and a Rs. 5,000 cash prize.

    Step 4

Pre-Departure Training Camp PTDC – You must go through a training process which involves HBCSE-organized experiments and theories.

    Step 5

International Junior Science Olympiad- Two teams accompanied by three teachers will represent India at the IJSO. At every stage, you must be at the peak of a surge. We all understand you study diligently. Therefore, why not enrol in this National Olympiad Programme and travel overseas for a prestigious Olympiad? You might earn the Gold Medal in IJSO 2024.

    IJSO 2024 Exam Pattern
