The Science Olympiad Foundation is an educational organisation that promotes academic competition and helps students acquire an aptitude for competition. The foundation organises the following series of Olympiads:

NSO (National Science Olympiad), is a rigorous academic and scholastic aptitude competition. The event encompasses various science disciplines, namely, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

NCO (National Cyber Olympiad) is an International talent search contest that identifies cyber-savvy talents amongst the younger generation.

IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is a means to identify and encourage the mathematical creativity of children.

IEO (International English Olympiad) is an international search for young linguistics, youngsters who have become maestros in the English language.

ICO (International Commerce Olympiad) conducted in partnership with The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, facilitates young students to determine their interests in Commerce as a profession and plan their careers accordingly.

IGKO (International General Knowledge Olympiad) endeavours to develop an interest in general knowledge and current affairs to ultimately excel academically.

ISSO (International Social Studies Olympiad) aims to build student interest in humanities and open several new vistas for professional growth.

Over 70000 schools from over 1400 cities participated in the academic year 2022-23, and millions of pupils took the seven Olympiad tests. These Olympiads take place in 70 different nations. Given the number of participants and engagement, the total worth of awards/scholarships/felicitations for the seven SOF Olympiad Exams held in 2022-23 was in the vicinity of Rs 20 crores.

Evaluation of Olympiad Exams

The assignment of ranking is based on competitors’ Olympiad scores. As a result, after completing the first level of the test, students can evaluate themselves academically at five distinct levels: within the school, at the city level, at the zonal level, at the regional level, and, most importantly, at the international level.

Each student receives a Student Performance Report (SPR). The SPR assesses the student’s abilities in both strong and weak areas and provides a full performance comparison of the student against other students at the School, City, Zonal, and International levels. An analysis of the student’s previous year’s performance is also available.

The students get Scholarships in accordance with their International, Zonal, and School ranking. They give prizes on an annual basis and also consist of monetary awards/scholarships, medals, gifts, certificates, and so on. At a major prize distribution ceremony in Delhi in the presence of notable people, chosen International toppers from each class get scholarships. The zonal and school winners of the respective schools get their prizes.

SOF IMO 2024 (International Mathematics Olympiad)

The International Mathematics Olympiad (SOF IMO) is an annual competition held by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) to assess the mathematical skills of students from classes 1–12. The SOF Olympiad introduces students to a challenging curriculum from a young age, enabling them to sharpen their creativity, logical reasoning, and critical thinking skills while also strengthening their self-confidence in a competitive atmosphere. The top 5% of students who qualify for the IMO level-1 competition will be eligible to take part in the IMO level-2 competition.

SOF IMO 2024: Syllabus

The SOF IMO 2024 (International Mathematics Olympiad) is conducted at two levels:

Level 1: The first level of the test is organized in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.

(i) The level 1 competition is a test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.

(ii) The question paper consists of four sections:

Section-1: Logical Reasoning
Section-2: Mathematical Reason
Section-3: Everyday Mathematics
Section-4: Achievers Section

(iii) There are separate question papers for each date of the exam.

(iv) The medium of the test is English.

(v) CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

(vi) The exam is conducted during school hours.

Level 2: The level 2 is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. The qualifiers for the second round would include the following:

At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each Zone and each class.
School Level: Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & score at least 50% qualifying marks.

SOF NSO 2024 (National Science Olympiad)

SOF’s annual National Science Olympiad (SOF NSO) looks at the natural talent and scientific capabilities of students in grades one to twelve. The NEP promotes Olympiads because they help students acquire critical problem-solving, critical thinking, and reasoning skills. The NSO test has two levels. After passing Level 1, you must take the Level 2 test to receive merit rank and awards.

Questions of level-I Olympiad exams will be 60% from the current class syllabus and 40% from the previous class syllabus, e.g., the Class-7 NSO exam will have 60% questions from the class-7 syllabus and 40% questions from the class 6 syllabus.
The Questions of level-II Olympiad exams will be from the current class syllabus only.
Questions in the ACHIEVERS SECTION will be from the current class syllabus only.

Academic Excellence Scholarship

SOF has announced the Academic Excellence Scholarship (SOF AES) for the academic year 2023-24.

The SOF-AES’s goal is to support students’ overall academic growth. The scholarship will be awarded to outstanding students who attain exceptional academic performance in Olympiad tests in a variety of subjects. Students with the highest total marks for any of the four Olympiad exams over the year will be selected as scholarship recipients in each class. Marks from the second level of the Olympiad will be used for IEO, NSO, and IMO. If the second-level exams are not held, the marks obtained in the first-level exams will be applied. 10 winners are selected from each state/zone. Therefore, 260 winners are to be chosen from 26 zones.

Each winner of SOF-AES will be awarded:

A Trophy
Cash award/scholarship of Rs 5000/- and
A citation.

In case of a tie between two or more students, winners will be decided on the following priority:

Students scoring higher cumulative marks in 1st-level exams.
Scoring higher marks in 1st level exams in the order of Mathematics, Science, English, General Knowledge, Computers and Social Studies.
Students scoring higher rank in 2nd level exams in the order of Mathematics, Science & English.
Winners of the AES will be declared by end-March ‘24.
